In a notable move to enhance user experience, Microsoft is introducing a new feature for Windows 10 and 11 that mirrors the functionality of Apple’s AirDrop, specifically targeting Android users. This development, highlighted by Windows Central, aims to streamline file sharing between Windows PCs and Android devices through a tool called Phone Link.
The new feature allows users to effortlessly share files by simply right-clicking on the desired item, selecting “Share,” and then choosing Phone Link. This process eliminates the need for any approval on the phone’s end, as the file transfer initiates immediately upon selection. This direct approach is designed to foster a more integrated experience for users who frequently switch between their PC and mobile devices.
To utilize this feature, users will need to meet a few system requirements, which are relatively lenient:
- A PC running Windows 10 (with the May 2019 update or later) or Windows 11
- An Android device operating on Android 9.0 or later
- The Link to Windows app version 1.24032.518.0 or later installed on the Android device
- Phone Link version 1.24032.156.0 or later on the PC
This feature is currently available on the Release Preview channel, suggesting that a broader rollout to all Windows 10 and 11 users may be imminent.
