The release of the 2006 sci-fi FPS game Prey was delayed by several issues, according to veteran developer Scott Miller.
Initial Development Challenges
Originally shown at E3 in 1998, Prey's ambitious development was led by the creators of Rise of the Triad. The project included a portal gun and other novel gameplay mechanics like spirit walking and anti-gravity walkways. However, challenges in completing the game engine and unsuccessful external support delayed progress, leading to a pause as resources shifted to Duke Nukem Forever. GT Interactive, which had invested $900,000, received reimbursement when development was halted.
Collaboration and Changes
After a hiatus, Gathering of Developers suggested Continuing the project with Human Head Studios. Many initial ideas, such as anti-gravity walkways and spirit walking, were maintained in the final release, but the original portal gun concept from the 1998 demo was diminished. Late in development, funding was withdrawn by Take-Two, but 3D Realms intervened to assist. The game launched successfully in 2006 to strong reviews.
Current Availability and Rights
As of 2025, the 2006 Prey is not available on digital storefronts. Rights, acquired by ZeniMax Media in 2009, complicate the remaster or re-release due to Bethesda's ownership of Arkane's unrelated 2017 Prey. A re-release of the classic version remains uncertain.
