Sony is reportedly shifting its strategy to prioritize console exclusivity for its major PlayStation titles, starting with the upcoming game Ghost of Yōtei, which will not receive a PC port. This decision marks a significant change in approach for Sony, which had previously expanded its reach to PC platforms.
Console Exclusivity Focus
According to a Bloomberg report, Sony's move is part of a broader strategy to reinforce the PlayStation brand by focusing on exclusive content for its consoles. While single-player games like Ghost of Yōtei will remain console-exclusive, online-focused titles such as Bungie's Marathon reboot will continue to be available on multiple platforms.
Performance and Market Concerns
Bloomberg's Jason Schreier highlights that recent PC ports have not met performance expectations, partly due to delayed releases and the requirement for players to create PlayStation Network accounts. Insiders within Sony express concerns that PC releases could potentially weaken the PlayStation brand and impact PlayStation 5 sales. Additionally, there are worries about the competitive edge of the next Xbox, which could run Windows and play PC ports more seamlessly.
Future PC Releases
Despite the shift, Sony reportedly has no plans to cancel already-announced PC versions of third-party projects like Death Stranding 2 and Kena: Scars of Kosmora. A Sony spokesperson declined to comment on the report, leaving some uncertainty about the company's long-term plans for PC releases.
