Sony is reportedly reconsidering its strategy of releasing major single-player PlayStation exclusives on Windows PC. This shift comes as the company evaluates the performance of its titles on platforms like Steam.
Shift in Release Strategy
According to industry insiders such as Jason Schreier, John Linneman, and Jez Corden, Sony plans to continue releasing live-service games on multiple platforms, but may scale back on PC ports of its single-player exclusives. Analysts at Alinea Analytics estimate that Sony's Steam releases have generated approximately $1.5 billion in revenue.
Performance of Recent Titles
Despite this revenue, some recent titles have not met expectations. Games like Horizon Forbidden West, God of War Ragnarök, and Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 have sold fewer copies than their predecessors and have seen a decline in peak concurrent player counts. The delay in PC ports, often released a year after their PlayStation debut, is cited as a reason for the lackluster performance, as it diminishes the initial hype.
Future of Single-Player Ports
Given the underwhelming performance on Steam, Sony might withdraw future single-player PC ports to maintain the value of its PlayStation consoles. However, there are exceptions, such as the success of Stellar Blade, indicating that some titles may still find a place on PC.
