Sony is reportedly revising its strategy for PlayStation game releases on PC, opting to maintain exclusivity for its single-player titles on the PlayStation 5. This change follows the moderate success of recent PlayStation PC ports.
Exclusivity for Single-Player Titles
According to Bloomberg's Jason Schreier, Sony has decided to cancel the PC version of the PS5 exclusive Ghost of Yotei. This move indicates a broader trend where other first-party single-player games will also remain exclusive to the PlayStation 5. The decision appears to be influenced by concerns over brand dilution and potential impacts on PlayStation 5 sales.
Multiplayer Games on Multiple Platforms
Despite this shift, Sony will continue to release its multiplayer games on multiple platforms. The multiplayer game Helldivers 2 was released simultaneously on PlayStation 5 and PC in February 2024, with an Xbox version following in August 2025. Similarly, Bungie's upcoming multiplayer shooter, Marathon, is set for a simultaneous release on PS5, PC, and Xbox Series X|S.
Competitive Landscape Considerations
Schreier notes that part of Sony's strategy may be a response to Microsoft's rumored next Xbox, which could play PC games. This development might pose a competitive challenge, as Sony aims to protect its flagship titles from appearing on rival consoles. The approach contrasts with Microsoft's strategy of releasing first-party titles across Xbox and PC, with some games also coming to PlayStation and Nintendo platforms.
