Sony is shifting its strategy by making its first-party PlayStation 5 (PS5) games console exclusives, according to Bloomberg's Jason Schreier. This move marks a departure from the company's recent practice of porting major titles to PC.
Change in Game Release Strategy
Since 2020, Sony has released several high-profile games on PC, including Horizon Zero Dawn, The Last of Us Part I, Ghost of Tsushima, God of War Ragnarök, and the Marvel’s Spider-Man series. However, upcoming titles like Ghost of Yotei and Saros are reportedly set to launch exclusively on PS5.
Reasons Behind the Shift
The decision to limit PC ports stems from several factors. Sources indicate that disappointing sales figures for PS5 games on PC, coupled with long delays between console and PC releases, have prompted the change. Additionally, there are internal concerns that PC availability might dilute the PlayStation brand and negatively impact future console sales.
Future Multi-Platform Releases
Despite this shift, some Sony-published games, particularly online or multiplayer titles like Marvel Tokon and Marathon, will remain multi-platform. Furthermore, Death Stranding 2 is still slated for a 2026 release on PC. Insiders also express apprehension about the competitive threat posed by a potential Windows-powered Xbox capable of running PC launchers, which could undermine the effectiveness of PlayStation ports.
A PlayStation spokesperson declined to comment on these developments when contacted by Bloomberg.
