Recording gameplay on various platforms, including PS5, Xbox, Nintendo Switch, and PC, allows users to capture and share their gaming experiences. Each system offers unique methods and durations for gameplay recording.
PS5 and Xbox Recording Features
On the PS5, internal capture runs in the background, storing up to an hour of gameplay. Users can press the Share button to access Create controls and save recent gameplay clips, with a default duration of three minutes, adjustable up to 60 minutes. Clips can be trimmed in the Media Gallery and exported via USB or the PlayStation App.
For Xbox, background capture is always active. Players can press the Xbox button followed by X to save the last 30 seconds, or use the View button to select a duration up to two minutes. Manual recording is available for up to 10 minutes on internal storage or one hour on external storage. Newer Xbox controllers feature a configurable Share button for quick access.
Switch and PC Capture Options
The Nintendo Switch allows users to save the last 30 seconds of gameplay by holding the Capture Button on the left Joy-Con. Clips can be edited in the Album and transferred via the Switch App or USB-C. For extended recordings, external capture devices are recommended.
PC users can utilize NVIDIA ShadowPlay, accessible via the NVIDIA App, which offers an Alt+Z overlay for saving gameplay. Steam also supports game recording with options for background recording up to 120 minutes or manual recording, compatible with Steam Deck.
External Capture Devices
External capture devices, such as the Elgato HD60, enable recording of console gameplay without the limitations of internal systems. These devices can connect to a PC or laptop, although users should be aware of potential latency and HDCP restrictions, which may require disabling on consoles to record protected content.
