Windows Security Offers Efficient Built-In Protections

18 Sep 2025

For many years, I relied on third-party antivirus software as a non-negotiable part of my digital security strategy. These applications, albeit effective at shielding my devices, often burdened me with endless pop-ups, notifications, and attempts to sell additional products. However, my perspective shifted dramatically when I became acquainted with the latest enhancements to Windows Security.

Windows Security has significantly evolved since the introduction of Windows 11. Previously recognized as Windows Defender, this tool is now seamlessly integrated into Windows, offering silent yet potent real-time protection. The incorporation of cloud-based threat intelligence and automatic updates via Windows Update ensures not only robust defense but also convenience, absent of upsell interruptions.

Key Features that Enhance Device Protection

Several advanced features of Windows Security have convinced me to transition away from paid antivirus solutions.

  • Ransomware protection: By utilizing the Controlled Folder Access feature, Windows Security thwarts unauthorized applications from accessing, encrypting, or modifying your files. Simply search for Ransomware Protection on your Windows device to manage blocked applications and safeguard crucial folders.
  • SmartScreen filter: This feature acts as a vigilant guardian while you browse. It issues warnings when you attempt to visit websites notorious for malicious activities, thereby aiding in the prevention of phishing attacks. To enable it, access Windows Security, navigate to App & Browser Control, and activate SmartScreen for Microsoft Edge.
  • Tamper Protection: Ensuring that security settings remain unchanged without your consent is paramount. Tamper Protection safeguards against unauthorized modifications, allowing only you to tweak threat protection and malware detection settings. A quick search for Tamper Protection on your device enables its activation.
  • Firewall & network protection: Windows Security's built-in firewall can be configured to suit both public and private networks. By accessing Firewall & Network Protection, you can enable the Microsoft Defender Firewall and, if desired, block all incoming connections on public networks for added security.
  • Data encryption: Device encryption within Device Security automatically encrypts your device, providing a shield against offline data theft. This feature ensures that sensitive information remains confidential, even if the device is physically compromised.

Windows Security obviates the necessity of a monthly subscription to safeguard against malware and spyware. This built-in suite is designed to offer robust protection for Windows devices, performing optimally when users are familiar with and utilize its impressive array of features.
