Microsoft Investigates BitLocker Issue in July 2024 Windows Update

24 Jul 2024

Microsoft's recent July 2024 Windows security update, released on July 9, 2024, has introduced an unexpected issue that has left many users facing the BitLocker recovery screen upon booting up their PCs. This bug affects a range of Windows versions, including Windows 11 version 23H2, Windows 11 version 22H2, Windows 11 version 21H2, Windows 10 version 22H2, and Windows 10 version 21H2. Even several versions of Windows Server dating back to Windows Server 2008 have not been spared.

BitLocker in the Spotlight

BitLocker, a well-established encryption tool designed to add an extra layer of security to devices, has been thrust into the limelight once again. While it is typically a silent guardian of data security, recent events have made it a topic of widespread discussion. The current issue with the Patch Tuesday update is more likely to appear if Device Encryption is enabled. Users encountering this bug are prompted to provide their BitLocker recovery key from their Microsoft account. Upon entering the recovery key, the PC should start up as usual.

For those who do not know their BitLocker recovery key, it can be retrieved by visiting Microsoft's recovery screen portal and logging into their Microsoft account. At present, using a recovery key remains the only known workaround for this issue. Microsoft is actively investigating and working on a permanent fix.

Interestingly, this is not the first time BitLocker has made headlines recently. An unrelated issue involving a CrowdStrike outage also led to a surge in Google searches for BitLocker. The CrowdStrike outage required users to initially use a BitLocker recovery key to resolve the issue. Although Microsoft has since updated its recovery tool to work without a BitLocker recovery key in certain situations, the incident highlighted the importance and complexity of BitLocker in modern computing.

Given the recent Patch Tuesday bug and the CrowdStrike outage both involving BitLocker, it is anticipated that searches for this feature will spike once again. Users are becoming increasingly aware of the critical role that BitLocker plays in securing their data and the potential complications that can arise when issues occur.

As Microsoft continues to work on a permanent fix for the current bug, users are advised to keep their BitLocker recovery keys handy and stay informed about any updates or patches released by Microsoft. The tech giant's commitment to resolving these issues underscores the importance of maintaining robust security measures in an ever-evolving digital landscape.
