Microsoft Releases Fix for BitLocker Issue in July 2024 Security Update

15 Aug 2024

Microsoft has addressed a significant security issue that caused certain Windows PCs to unexpectedly boot into BitLocker recovery mode rather than the usual startup sequence. This situation arose following the installation of the July 2024 security update, which was released on July 9, 2024. The BitLocker feature, known for its full disk encryption capabilities, is designed to safeguard data by encrypting entire volumes, thereby preventing unauthorized access to sensitive information. Accessing the files requires the correct decryption key, underscoring the importance of this feature for users.

However, the recent update inadvertently disrupted this functionality, particularly impacting users who have the Device Encryption feature activated. Microsoft acknowledged the issue, stating, “After installing the July 2024 Windows security update, you might see a BitLocker recovery screen upon booting your device. This screen does not commonly appear after a Windows update.” The company noted that the likelihood of encountering this problem increases for those with Device Encryption enabled, which can be found under Settings in the Privacy & Security section.

Affected Versions

The security bug affects a range of Windows operating system versions, including:

  • Client: Windows 11 version 23H2, Windows 11 version 22H2, Windows 11 version 21H2, Windows 10 version 22H2, Windows 10 version 21H2.
  • Server: Windows Server 2022, Windows Server 2019, Windows Server 2016, Windows Server 2012 R2, Windows Server 2012, Windows Server 2008 R2, Windows Server 2008.

In response to the issue, Microsoft has released a fix and is encouraging all users to apply it. “We recommend you install the latest update for your device as it contains important improvements and issue resolutions, including this one,” the company stated. The BitLocker recovery mode is typically triggered by hardware changes or updates to the Trusted Platform Module (TPM), which are necessary for regaining access to encrypted drives. For users needing to retrieve their BitLocker recovery key, it can be accessed by logging into the BitLocker recovery screen portal using their Microsoft account.
