Snipping Tool in Windows 11 Gains Quick Markup Feature

18 Sep 2025

Microsoft is enhancing the Windows 11 experience by introducing a new feature to the Snipping Tool, aimed at making the process of capturing and annotating screenshots more efficient. The latest update, currently available in the Windows 11 Dev and Canary builds, comes with a Quick markup option that saves time by letting users annotate images before they are even captured.

Streamlining the Screenshot Process

With the new Quick markup feature, users can open Snipping Tool via Win+Shift+S or by launching the application directly. Before selecting an area of the screen to capture, a Quick markup button now appears on the top toolbar. By clicking this or pressing Ctrl+E, the tool is activated, allowing immediate editing within the selection area. This effectively removes the need for separate editing steps post-screenshot, significantly improving workflow efficiency.

This development targets Windows 11 testers and is set to become more widely available should the testing phases yield positive results. It marks a strategic enhancement in how users interact with the Snipping Tool, minimizing interruptions and maximizing productivity.

Additional Updates to Paint and Notepad

Besides the advances in the Snipping Tool, Microsoft is also refining its other utility applications. The Paint application is updated to allow image saving as project files and includes an opacity slider for more nuanced brushwork. These changes promise to delight digital artists and casual users alike, paving the way for more creative freedom and control.

Moreover, Notepad receives a boost with the integration of Copilot+ AI tools. These capabilities, which come without the need for a subscription, include Summarize, Write, and Rewrite options, positioning the software as a more versatile tool for content creation and editing.

These updates reflect Microsoft's commitment to enhancing user experience across its suite of software, offering new opportunities for creative and efficient work practices. As these features move beyond the testing phase, users can anticipate a significantly upgraded interaction within Microsoft's ecosystem.
