Windows 11 Snipping Tool Update Adds Custom Save Location Feature

21 Sep 2024

New Features in the Snipping Tool

Windows 11 has long been praised for its robust features, yet one notable limitation of its default screenshot utility has been the inability to customize the default folder for saved images. While tech-savvy users could navigate through registry settings to make this change, it was not an intuitive process for the average user. Fortunately, this oversight is being addressed with the latest update to the Snipping Tool.

Microsoft recently announced the rollout of a new version of the Snipping Tool app, specifically version 11.2408.13.0, as part of its ongoing updates for Windows Insiders in the Canary and Dev Channels. This version introduces a highly anticipated feature: the ability to change the default folder for both screenshots and screen recordings.

“We are rolling out an update for Snipping Tool (version 11.2408.13.0 and newer) to Windows Insiders in the Canary and Dev Channels that introduces the ability to change the folder that original screenshots and screen recordings are automatically saved to. Just go to app settings in Snipping Tool to select a new default folder to try it out!”

While this update is currently available only to Windows Insiders, users can access version 11.2408.13.0 without waiting for the public release or enrolling in the preview program. However, it’s important to note that this version is still in preview, which may mean encountering some instability compared to the standard release.

How to Access the Update

For those eager to try out the new features, here’s a step-by-step guide to obtain the latest version:

  1. Visit store.rg-adguard.com and select ProductID from the first drop-down list.
  2. Paste 9MZ95KL8MR0L into the search box.
  3. Select Fast from the next drop-down menu.
  4. Download the file named Microsoft.ScreenSketch2022.2408.13.0neutral~8wekyb3d8bbwe.msixbundle (you may also find a newer version available).
  5. Run the downloaded file and click Update to install the new version.

Once the Snipping Tool is updated, users can easily navigate to the app’s settings. By expanding the option for Automatically save original screenshots, they can click Change to designate a new folder for their screenshots and recordings. Should any issues arise, users have the option to uninstall the Snipping Tool and revert to the latest stable version available in the Microsoft Store.
