Google Photos Adds Custom Sticker Feature on Android

04 Mar 2026

Google Photos has introduced a new feature for Android users, enabling them to create custom stickers from their photos. This update follows its earlier release on iPhone and marks a shift in Google Photos from a simple backup tool to a more creative editing platform.

Sticker Creation Process

The new feature leverages AI to automatically detect and highlight the main subject in a photo with a soft shimmer. Users can tap the shimmer to separate the subject from the background, creating a clean cutout. The AI is adept at handling complex edges, such as fur or messy hair, and provides a preview with a "Copy sticker" button.

Integration with Messaging Apps

Stickers are saved as PNG files with transparent backgrounds, allowing seamless integration into messaging apps like WhatsApp, Telegram, and Google Messages via Gboard. This integration enhances the user experience by facilitating easy sharing of personalized content.

Limitations and User Experience

Despite its capabilities, the AI has certain limitations. It does not offer brush or erase tools for refining cutouts, and the shimmer effect may not appear in crowded scenes or under flat lighting conditions. These constraints suggest areas for potential improvement in future updates.
