Dave Plummer, the original creator of Windows Task Manager, has developed a retro-futuristic dashboard for his personal AI project, Tempest AI. This project is designed to play the classic Atari game, Tempest. Plummer shared an image of the dashboard on X and made the code available on GitHub.
Features and Performance
The reimagined Task Manager includes RGB flairs, speedometer-style dial gauges, and a background soundtrack. Plummer noted that the dashboard is GPU-intensive, consuming about 75% of the GPU at 30 frames per second on his M2 Mac Pro. As such, it is not intended for continuous operation.
Historical Context and Updates
Plummer initially created the original Task Manager during his free time, which later became a part of Windows NT. Many of its components were integrated into Windows 2000, and Microsoft has continued to update the application. Notable updates include a change from MHz to MT/s for RAM speed units in May 2024 and a design revamp for Windows 11 in 2022.
This project serves as a playful exploration for Windows enthusiasts, especially amid recent Windows update issues like a broken Windows Recovery Environment, unintended BitLocker activation, and some PCs failing to boot.
