Valve Introduces Permanent Ban FAQ on Steam, Targets 16,000 TF2 Bots

03 Jul 2024

Team Fortress 2’s bot problem has been a long-standing issue in the world of PC gaming. The problem escalated when developer Valve took a step back from major work on the game in 2017. Despite ongoing bug fixes and community-authored expansions, the bot issue has spiraled out of control.

In response to player campaigns and pressure from the community, Valve recently launched a new FAQ page on Steam dedicated to players banned from Team Fortress 2. The page makes it clear that game bans are permanent and non-negotiable, leaving players with no room for appeal or explanation.

Judgement Day

Following the appearance of the new Steam page, a banwave targeted around 16,000 bots on June 27, causing a sudden disappearance of these malicious players from the game. TF2 YouTuber Shounic noted the immediate impact of the banwave, making it nearly impossible to find bots in the game.

While the exact number of banned accounts remains unverified, reports suggest that hundreds of accounts received lifetime bans, VAC bans, and community bans. The TF2 community is optimistic about the game’s future following the banwave, with hopes of a major comeback.

Despite the recent banwave, the TF2 community remains cautious about the game’s future. Valve’s actions may provide temporary relief from bots, but the problem is expected to persist. Players are enjoying the current bot-free environment but are unsure if this improvement will last.

Players are finding satisfaction in discussing and reporting known botters, relishing in the consequences of their actions. While the bot problem may not be fully resolved, the recent banwave has given players a moment of respite and a glimmer of hope for the game’s future.
