Google Enhances Drive with AI-Powered Ransomware Protection

01 Oct 2025

In a significant move to bolster cybersecurity, Google has introduced a new AI-powered ransomware detection and recovery feature within its Drive for Desktop application. This advancement seeks to counteract the persistent threat posed by ransomware, which can paralyze vital systems across hospitals, factories, and government offices.

Innovative Detection Technology

Google's new feature automatically identifies suspicious file activity reminiscent of ransomware attacks, which frequently result in mass encryption of data. Upon detecting such activity, Drive for Desktop smartly pauses syncing with the cloud, effectively creating a protective bubble around the affected files, thereby preventing further malware spread. The system subsequently alerts users via desktop notifications and emails, guiding them through file restoration via Drive’s web interface.

Administrators are notified through the Admin console, where they can access detailed activity logs. Notably, this feature is enabled by default for most Workspace customers, although IT teams retain the option to adjust its settings if desired.

Training and Performance

The ransomware detection model has undergone rigorous training using millions of real-world samples, drawing data from various sources, including Drive incidents and Mandiant investigations. It is adept at interpreting a wide array of file types such as PDFs, Microsoft Office files, and CAD files. According to Google, Drive’s detection mechanism typically activates after modifications to three or four files, boasting high precision with minimal data loss. Restoration of affected files is efficiently managed, generally reverting within seconds.

One notable advantage of this restoration capability is its potential to decrease dependency on traditional backup systems. Drive accommodates up to 100 file revisions and supports integration with other backup solutions through its APIs.

Strategic Collaborations and Rollout

Although Google has not entered into partnerships with Microsoft or Apple on the specifics of this detection technology, it has engaged with them at the system level to ensure quick detection and response capabilities. This AI-powered feature is currently being rolled out in open beta, included in most Google Workspace commercial plans without additional charges. Even consumer users can benefit from the file restoration capabilities.

By harnessing early detection technology coupled with swift recovery processes, Google aims to offer organizations an effective means to mitigate ransomware incidents, enhancing security without increasing complexity.
