The Samsung Galaxy XR is leveraging Android XR, Google's new AR/VR operating system, to expand the compatibility of Android apps in the virtual and augmented reality space. Nearly all Android apps can run on the Galaxy XR without additional development efforts.
Compatibility and Functionality
Apps developed for phones and tablets are automatically deemed compatible with Android XR on the Galaxy XR. They display in floating spatial panels and feature full support for XR input methods including eye and hand tracking, controllers, mice, and keyboards. These apps will look and function as they do on smartphones or tablets and can be resized if designed for it.
Only apps requiring unavailable hardware, such as GPS, will be excluded. Apps designed for large screens or with adaptable designs perform optimally on the Galaxy XR.
Strategic Comparison
Google’s strategy mirrors Apple's approach with visionOS and the Vision Pro but aims to provide broader compatibility and accessibility. The Galaxy XR’s lower price point compared to the Vision Pro could appeal to more developers and users, potentially boosting its market share.
