Microsoft has officially introduced MIDI 2.0 support for Windows 11, enhancing the operating system's capabilities for musicians and audio professionals. This update, released on 2026-02-18, comes over a year after it was first previewed to Windows Insiders.
Enhanced MIDI Functionality
The MIDI 2.0 implementation in Windows 11 addresses several user concerns by allowing multiple applications to utilize the same MIDI device and port simultaneously. Additionally, users can now control the names assigned to MIDI ports, providing greater flexibility and ease of use.
Backward Compatibility and New Drivers
To ensure compatibility with older devices, Microsoft has retained the usbaudio.sys driver, originally supporting MIDI 1.0 since Windows 3.1. A new USB MIDI 2.0 class driver, usbmidi2.sys, has also been introduced. By default, most MIDI 1.0 devices will continue using the older driver, but users can manually switch to the new driver if desired.
Reception and Impact
The preview of MIDI 2.0, released to Windows Insiders in February 2025, received positive feedback from musicians for its improved inbox MIDI drivers, multi-client routing, faster connections, and enhanced two-way communication. This update is expected to significantly enhance the audio production experience on Windows 11.
