In 2025, Google significantly enhanced its Play Protect system, using AI to block over 1.75 million policy-violating apps and removing more than 80,000 developer accounts from the Play Store. This move aims to strengthen Android's defenses against AI-powered malware before it reaches users.
AI Integration in App Review
Google has integrated AI models into its app review process, allowing for faster detection of complex malicious patterns. While human reviewers remain part of the process, AI's speed and accuracy have become crucial in identifying threats. In addition, Google blocked over 255,000 apps from requesting unnecessary sensitive data, such as location or photos.
Spam and Fraud Prevention
Spam protection measures were also improved, with Google blocking 160 million spam ratings and reviews in 2025. This includes fake five-star campaigns and organized review-bombing, which prevented an average 0.5-star drop for targeted apps. Play Protect now scans over 350 billion apps daily, identifying 27 million new malicious apps from outside Google Play.
Global Reach and Future Plans
Play Protect's enhanced fraud protection launched in 185 markets, covering 2.8 billion devices and stopping 266 million risky installation attempts. It also removed the option to disable Play Protect during phone calls to prevent social-engineering attacks. Looking forward, Google plans to simplify developer verification and introduce a single line of code in Android 16 to protect sensitive information from tapjacking attacks.
