Windows 11 Gains AI Features as Windows 10 Support Ends

17 Oct 2025

Microsoft is implementing new artificial intelligence updates to Windows 11, effectively phasing out its predecessor, Windows 10, as free security support for it ends. Millions of users with older computers are urged to upgrade, enhancing their systems while addressing potential security issues.

New AI Features Introduced

Among the freshly integrated features, Windows 11 users can now access a voice mode enabling them to interact with their devices using the phrase “Hey, Copilot,” part of Microsoft's AI chatbot technology. Additionally, AI features such as Copilot Vision are available, offering tools to analyze and provide feedback on various user activities, from document editing to gaming.

Microsoft's Yusuf Mehdi emphasized the transformative potential of these updates, likening them to the impact of the mouse and keyboard on personal computing. However, he noted potential challenges in adapting these human-computer interactions in shared work environments.

Implications for Windows 10 Users

With Windows 10 first introduced ten years ago, the stop of free support means users face the dilemma of upgrading or risking exposure to cybersecurity threats. While some users can opt for a paid extended support until October 2026, this is not a feasible solution for all, raising concerns over both security and environmental impacts of outdated hardware disposal.

Consumer advocacy groups have highlighted these challenges, emphasizing the risks of continued use of unsupported devices. There is ongoing pressure for sustainable solutions to handle the obsolescence of older devices, as PIRG's Nathan Proctor outlines the dual problems of potential security issues and environmental disposal concerns.

AI Competition and Strategy

Microsoft is positioning these AI updates as part of broader efforts to establish its operating system as a leading platform for generative AI tools. Competing against tech giants like Apple and Google, Microsoft aims to redefine its user experience through these enhancements, while addressing earlier criticism tied to privacy concerns related to features like Recall.
