Microsoft Expands Copilot+ AI to AMD and Intel Processors

04 Sep 2024

New Horizons for Copilot+

Microsoft is set to broaden the horizons of its Copilot+ artificial intelligence services for Windows users, announcing an expansion that will now include the latest processors from both AMD and Intel. This strategic move signifies a departure from the previous exclusivity to Qualcomm’s Snapdragon X series, marking a significant milestone in the evolution of AI integration in personal computing.

Pavan Davuluri, a representative from Microsoft, articulated the significance of this development, stating, “Today marks the next step in our journey as the Copilot+ PC portfolio expands with the introduction of new silicon technology — AMD Ryzen AI 300 series and Intel Core Ultra 200V series.” This expansion not only enhances the capabilities of Copilot+ but also reinforces Microsoft’s dedication to delivering cutting-edge AI experiences that prioritize fast performance, extended battery life, seamless connectivity, enhanced security, and personalized productivity.

The rollout of Copilot+ AI services for users on AMD and Intel’s latest chips is scheduled to commence this November. Previously, the functionality associated with Copilot+, which includes features like Recall—a tool designed to maintain a searchable record of user activities—was limited to devices powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon X processors, such as the Snapdragon Dev Kit for Windows. However, with the recent advancements in processor technology from Intel and AMD, which now feature dedicated neural networking co-processors, Microsoft is poised to extend its innovative offerings to these platforms as well.

Users with compatible AMD and Intel systems can anticipate a range of Copilot+ functionalities, including:

  • Live captioning and translation
  • Generative AI image creation in Microsoft Paint and Photos
  • AI-powered effects in Windows Studio

These features will be rolled out in updates beginning in November. However, the much-anticipated Recall feature remains on hold, with an updated preview version expected to be available for Windows Insider members in October. As Microsoft continues to collaborate with its ecosystem partners, the future of Copilot+ PCs looks promising, paving the way for a more integrated and intelligent computing experience.

What is GitHub Copilot?
