Copilot Faces Challenges in Transforming PC Market

19 Sep 2025

Microsoft has been advocating for its new line of Copilot+ PCs and the burgeoning Windows on Arm ecosystem, promoting them as groundbreaking for personal and enterprise computing. However, the market's reaction has been less than enthusiastic. Analysts have pointed to sluggish adoption rates earlier this year, noting that businesses are deterred by the nearly 57% increase in average purchase prices. The higher costs come without the allure of compelling applications that fully leverage on-device AI capabilities, which could justify the premium pricing.

The current suite of Arm-native applications Microsoft highlights in its marketing consists predominantly of ports from existing tools. These ports fall short of offering the innovative edge needed to sway businesses toward adopting AI-powered hardware. Despite Microsoft's claims of breakthrough performance, many potential buyers remain unconvinced without unique software solutions that mandate on-device AI functionality.

Performance and Practicality Issues

A practical test using a Surface Laptop 7 equipped with Arm and AI silicon revealed ongoing challenges, including intermittent cursor problems and performance slowdowns. While Microsoft advertises impressive battery life figures—up to 15 hours for web browsing and 22 hours for local video playback—real-world productivity tasks reduce operating time to roughly ten hours.

Windows on Arm has been in development for several years now, initially facing criticism for depending on Intel emulation, which limited performance on devices like the older, high-priced Snapdragon models. Microsoft maintains that Arm-native applications account for '90 percent of total user minutes.' Still, even executives concede that the ecosystem lacks a 'killer app' on par with seminal software tools like email or Excel.

The tech giant acknowledges the gap in software innovation that could take full advantage of AI capabilities. This gap remains a significant hurdle in convincing enterprises to invest in Copilot+ technology aggressively. Without a robust lineup of AI-dependent applications, Copilot+ PCs risk failing to deliver on the ambitious promises unlocked in marketing campaigns.

As the tech world has yet to identify software solutions that unequivocally require on-device AI, the ongoing push for Copilot+ seems to be more of an advanced hardware showcase than a practical leap in computing utility. For Microsoft, bridging this software gap will be crucial in aligning consumer expectations with the capabilities touted in its promotional efforts.
