Microsoft Releases Windows 10 Beta Update 22H2 to Fix Memory Leaks

23 Aug 2024

Microsoft has unveiled a new beta update for Windows 10, designated as 22H2 (KB5041582), aimed at addressing memory leaks and crashes for users in the Beta and Release Preview channels. This update is a significant step forward for Insiders, as it tackles several critical issues that have been affecting system performance.

Key Fixes and Enhancements

The KB5041582 update specifically resolves a memory leak associated with Bluetooth devices, which has caused certain applications to unexpectedly stop functioning. Additionally, it addresses an Input Method Editor (IME) memory leak that occurs when closing combo boxes that have input focus. Alongside these fixes, Microsoft has also rectified a Bind Filter Driver bug that led to system freezes when accessing symbolic links, as well as a restart issue linked to a Microsoft System Center Configuration Manager (SCCM) task that was unable to re-enable the Unified Write Filter (UWF) due to a deadlock situation.

The Windows Insider Program Team emphasized that both the Beta Channel and Release Preview Channel will receive identical Windows 10 builds. However, the Beta Channel serves as a testing ground for new features that are still in development and not yet ready for the broader Windows 10 user base.

With the installation of KB5041582, Insider systems running Windows 10, version 22H2 will see their version updated to Build 19045.4842.

Windows 10 Beta Channel Reopened After Three Years

In a notable development, Microsoft reopened the Windows 10 beta channel in early June, marking the introduction of the first Windows 10 Beta build since 2021, a three-year hiatus for Insiders in these channels. The Windows Insider team articulated the need for a dedicated space to foster active feature development, stating, “To bring new features and more improvements to Windows 10 as needed, we need a place to do active feature development with Windows Insiders.”

This reopening allows Insiders to experiment with new features for Windows 10, version 22H2, prior to their general release. Those eager to explore the latest enhancements can easily switch to the Beta Channel by navigating to Settings > Update & Security > Windows Insider Program and selecting the Beta channel from the available options.

It is crucial for users to note that opting for the Canary or Dev channels will result in an upgrade to the latest Windows 11 build available for those channels. Microsoft has also indicated that there will be a brief window for users to revert to Windows 10, although this will necessitate a clean installation.
