Microsoft has identified an issue with the Windows 11 Media Creation Tool (MCT), version 26100.6584, released on 2025-09-29, causing it to close unexpectedly on Windows 10 devices without error messages. This issue hinders the creation of installation media and upgrades on Windows 10 PCs. Microsoft is addressing the problem but has not provided a specific timeline for a fix.

Upgrade Challenges for Windows 10 Users

With Windows 10 reaching end of support on 2025-10-14, users are urged to upgrade to Windows 11 to maintain access to security updates. Ordinarily, the upgrade process involves using Windows Update via Settings. However, the MCT, a frequently used tool for clean installations or creating bootable media, currently presents reliability issues.

While Microsoft works on resolving the MCT problem, users can opt for alternative methods. These include downloading the Windows 11 Disk Image (ISO) directly from Microsoft's website, or using the Windows 11 Installation Assistant to manage the upgrade process.

Compatibility and Extended Security Updates

Users should verify hardware compatibility before upgrading, requiring a 64-bit dual-core CPU with TPM 2.0, UEFI with Secure Boot, 4 GB RAM, and 64 GB storage. For those unable to upgrade, Windows 10 devices can still receive security updates by enrolling in the Extended Security Updates (ESU) program until 2026-10-13.

Enrollment in the ESU program can be done via Windows Update and requires a Microsoft account. Options to manage enrollment include using 1,000 Microsoft Rewards points to bypass OneDrive sync or paying a $30 fee to continue using a local account. The requirement for OneDrive sync is waived in the EU, although a Microsoft account remains necessary.
