Windows Backup, Settings App, Game Pass Get New Features and Fixes

28 Jun 2024

In the latest Build 26244, Microsoft has introduced a series of changes and improvements aimed at enhancing user experience. Among the notable updates is the inclusion of sound settings in Windows Backup. This means that users can now back up their sound schemes and restore them through the Windows Backup app, ensuring a seamless transition when switching devices or recovering from system issues.

Enhanced Settings App

The Settings app has also received a significant update. A new banner featuring an “Add now” button has been added, allowing users to easily include a recovery email address for their Microsoft account. This small but crucial addition aims to bolster account security and streamline the recovery process.

Additionally, a new Game Pass recommendations card will now appear on the Settings homepage. This feature will provide personalized game suggestions based on the titles users have previously played, making it easier to discover new games that match their interests.

Fonts Control Panel Redirection

In a move to modernize the user interface, Microsoft is rolling out a change that redirects links for the Fonts Control Panel page. Users can still access this feature by navigating to Settings > Personalization > Fonts. For those who prefer the traditional method, the Fonts Control Panel UI remains accessible via the system fonts folder in File Explorer.

Fixes and Known Issues

Build 26244 also addresses several issues from previous versions. Notably, an underlying issue causing a Pcasvc.dll error pop-up message for some Insiders upgrading from versions 22H2 or 23H2 has been fixed.

However, as with any test build, there are known issues that users should be aware of. The Windows Update page in Settings may not display correctly for Insiders using certain languages. Task Manager also has a glitch where colors in the Performance section do not render properly in dark mode. Additionally, there are reported errors with voice typing for specific languages.

For those participating in the Windows Insider program and upgrading to the latest release in the Canary Channel, these updates and known issues are part of the ongoing development process. Users can find the full release notes on Microsoft’s blog. Interestingly, there are no mentions of the controversial Recall feature in this release, consistent with the previous build.
