To securely pass on a Windows PC, owners must wipe personal data and reinstall the operating system. This ensures the device can be safely transferred to a new user.
Migrate and Backup Data
Start by migrating files using the Windows Backup app available on certain Windows 11 versions. This tool saves settings, Microsoft Store app lists, and can back up files to OneDrive. For essential desktop apps, record installation files and activation keys from Control Panel settings. Consider backing up data to cloud storage or an external hard drive for safety.
Encrypt and Wipe Securely
Reinstalling an OS doesn’t make old files inaccessible. On Windows 11 Pro, use BitLocker for full-disk encryption—files remain secure without a recovery key after a wipe. For Windows 11 Home users, delete critical files and use the command ‘cipher /w:c:’ to wipe free space securely.
Prepare a Fresh Installation
Choose a method to install a clean Windows 11:
- Reset: Navigate to Settings > System > Recovery > Reset PC. Choose 'Remove everything' and possibly enable a secure wipe. Afterward, the setup screen will appear for the next user.
- Reimage: If your PC has OEM features or is in warranty, use the recovery partition or manufacturer tools for a factory image.
- Clean Install: Advanced users can create bootable installation media via the Media Creation Tool to reformat, repartition, and install Windows 11, avoiding a Windows.old folder.
After finalizing any method, shut down the PC at the out-of-box experience screen, ready for the new owner.
