Inetpub Vulnerability Mitigated in Recent Microsoft Update

09 Jun 2025

Microsoft has released a critical security update aimed at addressing a vulnerability related to the accidental deletion of the inetpub folder on Windows systems. This issue emerged following system updates issued in April, which inadvertently allowed the folder to be removed, thereby blocking further updates.

Introducing a New Solution

To tackle the problem, Microsoft has introduced a new Powershell script called Set-InetpubFolderAcl.ps1. This script is designed to recreate the absent inetpub folder and accurately configure its permissions to prevent unauthorized access. By ensuring that access rights are correctly set, it enhances the security of systems vulnerable to malicious exploits.

The vulnerability not only posed a risk of unauthorized access but also had the potential to halt future updates, affecting system stability and security. Therefore, Microsoft's intervention with this Powershell solution is both timely and essential. The script goes beyond the restoration of the inetpub folder; it also adjusts the access rights for the DeviceHealthAttestation directory, if it exists on the system. This step is crucial in bolstering security measures against possible vulnerabilities.

The incident underscores the importance of diligent management of system directories and ensuring that existing system folders maintain their intended permissions. As Microsoft continues to advance its systems' robustness against digital threats, its commitment to rapidly addressing such vulnerabilities is critical to instilling user confidence.

Users impacted by this issue are encouraged to implement the Powershell script solution provided by Microsoft. By doing so, they can not only restore their system’s functionality but also safeguard it against potential threats. The tech giant has reassured users that this update is part of ongoing efforts to fortify Windows systems against emerging security challenges in the digital landscape.
