Microsoft has simplified the naming conventions for Windows 11 updates, removing the dates and OS version numbers previously used.
Changes for Update Titles
The new format excludes the YYYY-MM date and the "cumulative" descriptor from many update names. Monthly cumulative updates now appear as "Security Update (KB5034123) (26100.4747)" and optional updates as "Preview Update (KB5062660) (26100.4770)." This change aims to make the names shorter and more readable.
However, this simplification means it's harder to identify whether an update is regular, optional, or an Insider build.
IT Administrators' Reactions
IT administrators have expressed concern over the loss of valuable information. The absence of specific release dates and versions complicates troubleshooting and update tracking. They worry about distinguishing different types of updates effectively.
Despite this, Microsoft has clarified that the naming for most updates will remain unchanged in the Microsoft Update Catalog and Windows Server Update Services (WSUS). Feature updates like Windows 11 version 25H2 will retain their existing naming convention.
Looking Ahead
Despite backlash, Microsoft is open to feedback and states they plan further improvements to address concerns. The current new naming system will continue to evolve based on user input.
