Microsoft has addressed a critical issue in the Windows Update process affecting both Windows 10 and Windows 11 users. This longstanding bug caused the "Update and shut down" option to function unexpectedly, acting instead as "Update and restart." The fix is implemented starting with Windows 11 25H2 Build 26200.7019.
Bug Fix Implementation
The October 2025 optional update KB5067036 rectifies the issue where selecting "Update and shut down" fails to power off the device completely. Laptop users had reported waking up to devices on the login screen, contrary to expectations. This update ensures devices properly shut down as intended.
Title Simplification
To make updates more accessible, Microsoft is simplifying update titles. While removing unnecessary technical jargon, identifiers like the KB number and build version are maintained for clarity and tracking.
Persistent Driver Error
Despite the fixes, Microsoft acknowledges an ongoing challenge with error 0x80070103 in Windows 11 updates, an issue not fully resolved. This error often emerges when reinstalling an existing driver, appearing as 0x800f0983 in Windows Update logs. An October 2025 patch has, however, reduced its occurrence.
