Xbox Users in UK to Verify Age for Social Features Access

30 Aug 2025

Microsoft is mandating that Xbox users in the UK verify their age to continue accessing social features, aligning with the UK’s Online Safety Act. The act, which came into force in July 2025, aims to enhance child protection online. Users have been given until early 2026 to complete age verification, failing which they risk losing access to these features. However, gaming experiences, existing friendships, and groups remain unaffected by this change.

User Verification Process

The verification process will be facilitated by Yoti, a Microsoft-hosted service known for its capability to estimate age through selfies. Alternatives include verification via a state ID—such as a passport or driving license—credit card checks, or mobile provider validation. Microsoft emphasizes that these measures are essential to ensure that users encounter age-appropriate content and experiences, which in turn fosters a safer community environment.

Impact and Future Plans

While some see this as a step toward creating a safer digital space for youth, critics argue that Xbox already includes parental controls that serve a similar purpose. Additionally, there's growing concern about the potential for region-based enforcement to be countered by VPN usage. Indeed, several providers, including NordVPN, Surfshark, and Proton VPN, have reported an increase in subscribers following the enactment of these rules.

Despite these criticisms, Microsoft remains steadfast, indicating plans to extend these age verification regulations to other regions in the future. This proactive approach underscores their commitment to safeguarding user interaction and ensuring an optimal balance between safety and user accessibility.
