Screen Recording Features in Windows 10 and 11

08 Nov 2025

Windows 10 and 11 provide integrated options for screen recording without needing additional software. These capabilities are embedded within two tools: Game Bar and Snipping Tool.

Game Bar Functionality

The Game Bar in Windows is a versatile tool for screen recording. Users can adjust settings through Settings > Gaming > Captures. By default, all recordings are stored in the Captures folder within Videos.

  • Record from 15 seconds up to 4 hours.
  • Enable or disable background recording with customizable durations.
  • Audio capture options allow toggling of system and microphone audio levels.
  • Common shortcuts include Windows+G for opening the Game Bar and Windows+Alt+R for starting and stopping recording.
  • Recordings appear in the Gallery for review.

Game Bar can operate without opening the full interface using keyboard shortcuts, enhancing user flexibility.

Snipping Tool Enhancements

Available from Windows 11 build 22621.1344 onwards, the Snipping Tool adds new screen recording features. Users start recordings by selecting an area with the Camera icon button and can pause or stop as needed.

  • Audio sources can be pre-configured for recordings.
  • Completed recordings can be played, saved in MP4 format, edited, or shared.
  • Recording setting adjustments include microphone and system audio defaults.

Both tools facilitate easy capturing, saving, and editing of screen content, removing the need for third-party solutions.

These built-in screen recording options in Windows 10 and 11 support a range of capture needs, providing users with easy-to-use functionalities directly within their operating systems.
