Zed Expands Code Editor with Windows Beta Release

30 Sep 2025

Zed Industries has taken a significant step forward by launching a public beta of its much-anticipated Rust-based code editor for Windows. With its previous releases garnering attention on macOS and Linux, this new extension to Windows marks a pivotal enhancement in the software's journey. A Windows x86-64 nightly beta is now accessible, and testers are being welcomed in phases to ensure a smooth transition, while maintaining an eye on October for broader availability. The grand unveiling of Zed 1.0 is slated for Spring 2026, promising to deliver improved capabilities, particularly for developers utilizing Rust, Python, and various web languages.

Future Enhancements and Strategic Development

In its pursuit of excellence, the team at Zed Industries has focused on strategic developments, which include adding support for notebooks and fostering multi-agent collaborations. The editor’s inception as a beta in March 2023 set the foundation, with co-founder Nathan Sobo prioritizing the use of Rust coupled with a GPU-accelerated UI framework. This choice was deliberate, aiming to surpass the capacities of Electron. Over the months, Zed evolved significantly, embracing open-source principles, integrating artificial intelligence features, and introducing a debugger alongside native Git support.

Technical Challenges and Testing

Developing the Windows version presented distinct challenges due to inherent differences between Windows and Unix-like systems. Nonetheless, informal tests indicate that Zed is remarkably efficient in its resource utilization. It consumes considerably less RAM compared to industry counterparts like VS Code, which registers at 730MB, while Zed operates at a more modest 142MB. By contrast, Notepad++ utilizes about 22.7MB. A notable feature in the Windows build is its capability to connect to Windows Subsystem for Linux (WSL) instances. This is facilitated by a server component accessible through the Remote Projects menu, thus enabling seamless editing in Windows while running and debugging within WSL.

Though users have reported certain bugs within the preview, the beta version has generally been commended for its responsiveness and intuitive functionality. However, as it remains a pre-release, it is offered at users’ discretion, with the understanding of potential risks. This phase is crucial for ironing out inconsistencies, laying the groundwork for a refined and robust version 1.0 release anticipated in the coming years.
