Pune Police Commissioner Warns Public of Online Fraud Using His Photo

16 Jul 2024

City police commissioner Amitesh Kumar expressed his shock after discovering that online fraudsters had used his photo for display on a social media messaging app. The fraudsters pretended to be him and sought money from people by claiming that he was stuck in a foreign country.

Kumar revealed, "A well-wisher called and informed me about the fake account with my photo." He further explained that the suspects used a number that appeared to be international but was actually operated using a VPN.

The Commissioner of Police took immediate action by uploading a message on the app, urging all his friends and acquaintances to refrain from sending money or responding to the fake number with the misleading picture.

Google Messages' New Feature

We also recently covered an article on the new feature in Google Messages that automatically generates previews for shared links. This feature enhances the user experience within the messaging app by providing details such as the webpage’s title, description, and image. Users can easily enable or disable this function in their settings.

This new feature is part of Google’s ongoing efforts to improve user interaction and safety within its messaging platform. By offering a preview of shared links, users can make more informed decisions before clicking on potentially harmful or misleading URLs.

As online fraud continues to evolve, it is crucial for users to stay vigilant and utilize the tools available to them. The incident involving Commissioner Kumar serves as a stark reminder of the lengths to which fraudsters will go to deceive unsuspecting individuals. Meanwhile, advancements like Google Messages' link preview feature provide an additional layer of security, helping users navigate the digital landscape with greater confidence.

In light of these developments, it is advisable for individuals to regularly update their app settings and stay informed about new features designed to enhance security. By doing so, they can better protect themselves against online scams and fraudulent activities.
