According to a report by Bloomberg, the decision came after eight female employees lodged complaints with human resources regarding Barrett’s conduct, which included flirtatious messages and comments about their attractiveness, as well as implications that he could influence their career advancement due to his seniority within the company.
Barrett's Response
In light of the allegations, Barrett has publicly expressed a differing perspective on the situation. He stated, “I feel that I have always conducted myself with integrity and been respectful and supportive of my colleagues, many of whom I consider my closest friends.” He further emphasized that he never intended for his communications to be perceived as unwelcome, adding, “If anyone ever felt that way about their interaction with me, I am truly sorry.”
Sony's Stance
While Barrett’s situation has garnered attention, Sony, the parent company of Bungie, has issued a statement underscoring its commitment to addressing misconduct. Although the statement did not specifically mention Barrett’s case, it affirmed that “all complaints of misconduct are taken very seriously.” The company reiterated its policy of promptly investigating every complaint and taking appropriate action based on the findings.
Barrett’s tenure at Bungie began in 1999, and he remained with the studio until April 2024, marking a significant chapter in his career within the gaming landscape.
