Streamlined Organization

PowerToys Workspaces introduces a more organized method for managing applications, particularly beneficial for users operating on single-screen laptops, a demographic that has historically underutilized virtual desktop features. The new functionality allows users to arrange their preferred applications in a specific layout, ensuring that everything is in its right place when needed. A standout feature is the ability to configure the workspace to open specific files upon launching, catering to those who prioritize efficiency and organization.

Currently referred to as App Layouts, Microsoft has indicated that the feature will officially be named Workspaces when it is released in the forthcoming 0.84 revision of PowerToys, which remains in its preview stage despite already encompassing a wide array of applications.

How It Works

The operation of PowerToys Workspaces is straightforward yet effective. Users will first align their applications across multiple monitors according to their preferences. By utilizing a designated shortcut key, Workspaces will capture a “screenshot” of the desktop layout—though it’s important to note that this is not a traditional screenshot; rather, it records the positions of the applications on the screen.

Following this, a layout screen will appear, reminiscent of the Snap Layouts interface, displaying small icons that represent the applications and their respective positions. Users will have the flexibility to add or remove applications, rearranging them as desired before saving the layout. This feature allows for the creation of multiple layouts, which can be loaded at any time, similar to the existing functionality of switching between virtual desktops.

Advanced Customization

In true PowerToys fashion, Workspaces offers additional customization options that cater to more technical users. The configuration screen allows for precise window resizing using specific pixel counts and the capability to load designated files when applications are launched. This level of detail ensures that users can create a workspace that perfectly fits their workflow.

While primarily aimed at developers, the benefits of PowerToys Workspaces extend to any user who appreciates a well-organized digital environment. Although Microsoft has yet to announce a specific release date for this feature, it will seamlessly integrate into existing PowerToys configurations for those who keep their software updated. With PowerToys currently at version 0.83 and Workspaces expected in version 0.84, users can anticipate its arrival in the near future.
