As the tech community delves into the latest preview builds of Windows 11, intriguing features are beginning to surface, hinting at enhanced functionalities on the horizon. Among these discoveries is the innovative “Intelligent media search,” a feature poised to revolutionize how users interact with their local audio and video files.
Imagine having a two-hour instructional video and needing to locate a specific segment. Thanks to insights shared by @XenoPanther on X regarding build 27695, Windows 11 is set to enable users to perform just that. Once activated, the operating system will initiate an indexing process for your local files, leveraging an AI model to transcribe all media content. Users will then receive a notification indicating that they can conduct a “content-based” search within their media files.
Search by Spoken Words
Search by spoken words in your indexed video or audio files. By clicking ‘I agree,’ you consent to scanning the media files on your device. If needed, the required model will be downloaded and installed in the background. Your media files are being processed. Once the AI model is set up, it needs to transcribe your media files and index them before enabling content-based search. We’ll inform you once the process is complete.
At this stage, it remains unclear whether this feature will be exclusive to Copilot+ PCs, which are equipped with advanced NPUs. Currently, Windows 11 boasts several AI-driven capabilities that are compatible with traditional systems powered by Intel and AMD processors. As such, the community eagerly awaits Microsoft’s official acknowledgment of “content-based search,” along with details on its operational mechanics and hardware prerequisites.
Copilot+ PCs and AI Capabilities
In relation to Copilot+ PCs, recent findings reveal that Windows 11 will allow users to uninstall Recall, should disabling it not suffice. These devices have also gained support for DirectML and WebNN, enhancing their AI capabilities. For those interested in exploring these advanced features without the hefty price tag of $999 or more, there is promising news: models priced at $799, featuring an eight-core Snapdragon X Plus processor, are anticipated to launch in September 2024.
