Microsoft Introduces New File-Sharing Feature for Windows and Android

19 Aug 2024

In a strategic move to enhance user experience, Microsoft has introduced a new feature for Windows 10 and 11 that aims to streamline file sharing between PCs and Android devices, positioning itself as a formidable competitor to Apple’s AirDrop. This innovative functionality is seamlessly integrated into the Phone Link app, allowing users to transfer files with remarkable ease.

Seamless Integration with Phone Link

To take advantage of this feature, users must ensure they have updated both the Phone Link and Link to Windows applications. This update transforms the Phone Link app from its previous role—primarily focused on notification mirroring, app usage, and call management—into a robust tool for file sharing.

For those looking to share files from a Windows PC to an Android device, the process is straightforward: simply select Phone Link as the destination within File Explorer. Conversely, when transferring files from an Android device to a Windows PC, users can utilize the standard Android sharing menu and select Link to Windows as their sharing method.

Simple Steps for File Sharing

Regardless of the direction of the file transfer, the receiving device will receive a notification alerting them to the incoming file, ensuring a smooth and informed exchange. To facilitate this seamless sharing experience, it is essential for users to have the Phone Link app version 1.24032.156.0 or later installed on their PC, alongside the Link to Windows app version 1.24032.518.0 or higher on their Android device.

  • From Windows PC: Right-click the desired file in File Explorer, select Share from the menu, and choose Phone Link as the sharing option.
  • From Android Device: Tap on any file, hit the Share icon, select Link to Windows from the available options, and then choose your PC’s name.

Future Prospects

While Google’s Nearby Share has already established a means for transferring files between Windows and Android devices, Microsoft’s latest feature promises to elevate the efficiency and user-friendliness of this process. Currently, this AirDrop-like functionality is exclusively available to members of the Windows Insider Program’s Release Preview Channel, which is tasked with testing near-final updates. However, a broader rollout for all users is anticipated in the near future.
