On a seemingly ordinary Wednesday, I found myself immersed in the captivating world of “fairy chimneys” and the intriguing practice of carving homes and temples into mountainsides. This unexpected journey of discovery was made possible by one of Windows’ lesser-known features: Windows Spotlight.

Windows Spotlight offers a refreshing twist to your desktop experience by rotating your background with stunning nature photography sourced from Microsoft Bing’s extensive licensed archives. Unlike the limited selection of wallpaper themes available for download, Spotlight opens the door to a vast array of images, transforming your workspace into a gallery of natural beauty.

What Makes Windows Spotlight Stand Out

What particularly draws me to Windows Spotlight are its two standout features. First, the diversity of images is impressive. While duplicates may occasionally appear, Microsoft has improved its algorithm, ensuring a broader spectrum of visuals. Gone are the days of the iconic “Bliss” image from Windows XP; now, users can enjoy a plethora of breathtaking landscapes, including the enchanting vistas of Cappadocia in Turkey.

Secondly, the educational aspect of Spotlight is a delightful bonus. Each time a new image graces my screen, a small “Learn about this picture” shortcut beckons. Clicking this link transports me to a Bing page brimming with information about the featured subject. Not only do I start my day with a visually stimulating backdrop, but I also gain knowledge about the wonders of our world.

How to Turn on Windows Spotlight

To activate Windows Spotlight, navigate to the Windows Settings menu. Select Personalization > Background, where you will find a drop-down menu offering various options, including a specific picture, a solid color, or a slideshow. Windows Spotlight resides at the bottom of this list. For those using older PCs, the Bing Wallpaper app is available for direct download from Microsoft, while Windows 11 users can enjoy Spotlight seamlessly integrated into their system.

A Minor Drawback

While the charm of Windows Spotlight is undeniable, it does come with a minor drawback: the lack of control over how frequently the wallpaper refreshes. For those who prefer a more static desktop, the constant changes can be a source of distraction, especially if portions of the desktop remain visible. It would be beneficial if users could set preferences for image updates, perhaps even suggesting seasonal themes, like serene beaches during the cold winter months.

Despite this small limitation, the majority of my applications remain maximized, often obscuring the images provided by Bing and Windows. However, every so often, a glimpse of a stunning photograph peeks through as I close a window, and in those moments, Windows Spotlight never fails to uplift my spirits.

Why is Windows Spotlight not working?

Windows Spotlight may not be working due to several reasons: internet connectivity issues, not granted necessary permissions, corrupted cached images, or misconfigured settings. To resolve these, ensure you're connected to the internet, check your privacy settings, clear Spotlight's cache by deleting files in 'C:\Users\[YourUsername]\AppData\Local\Packages\Microsoft.Windows.ContentDeliveryManager_cw5n1h2txyewy\LocalState\Assets', or re-enable Spotlight under 'Settings > Personalization > Lock screen'.

How to get Windows Spotlight as desktop background?

Windows Spotlight is designed to display images on the lock screen and does not support setting them as your desktop background natively. However, you can manually set these images as your background. Go to 'C:\Users\[YourUsername]\AppData\Local\Packages\Microsoft.Windows.ContentDeliveryManager_cw5n1h2txyewy\LocalState\Assets', copy the desired images to another location, rename them to add a .jpg extension, and then use 'Settings > Personalization > Background' to set these images as your desktop background.
