Microsoft Expands xCloud Gaming to Broader Subscriber Base

28 Aug 2025

Microsoft is once again reshaping the future of gaming with its xCloud platform. In a strategic move to expand its user base, Microsoft is opening access to its cloud gaming service to Game Pass Standard and Core subscribers. Previously restricted to Game Pass Ultimate members, this extension is set to enhance the gaming experience for a broader audience without the need for high-end gaming systems.

Game Pass Standard, priced at $10, and Game Pass Core at $15, will allow players to stream a curated selection of games included in their subscription. The expansion also permits streaming of supported titles from personal libraries, offering more flexibility and choice to gamers wishing to explore different game genres.

Broadening Game Access

While Game Pass Ultimate will retain its set of premium features, such as exclusive and day-one titles, online console multiplayer, and third-party memberships like EA Play, the allowance for Standard and Core subscribers marks a significant development. The service will initially roll out to Xbox Insider testers in select regions, setting Microsoft on a path to possibly capture a larger market share in the competitive cloud gaming sphere.

Select PC titles included in the expanded offering will also be streamable on both desktops and handhelds. Microsoft remains committed to supporting manufacturers that integrate Xbox features into PCs and handheld devices, hinting at an all-encompassing gaming ecosystem.

Competitive Landscape

Within the bustling cloud gaming market, Microsoft contends with notable competitors like Nvidia GeForce Now, Amazon Luna, and Shadow. By making a broad range of technological advances and maintaining relationships with hardware partners, Microsoft aims to stay ahead of the curve. However, this expansion strategy is not the company’s only growth vector.

Furthermore, Microsoft has hinted at the development of a hybrid console and potential Xbox successors by 2027, suggesting that the company envisions a seamless blend of cloud and traditional gaming. Additionally, speculation surrounds the possibility of a free, ad-supported Game Pass tier, which could further diversify Microsoft’s gaming solutions.

The current changes emphasize Microsoft’s pursuit to democratize gaming through xCloud. By easing access barriers and extending game offerings, the company not only strengthens its foothold in the gaming community but also caters to the ever-evolving needs and preferences of its users. As the rollout continues, gamers worldwide eagerly await the chance to explore these new dimensions of gaming.
