Firebreak Performance Fails to Meet Expectations, Remedy Optimistic

25 Aug 2025

Remedy Entertainment's recent launch of FBC Firebreak was met with subdued enthusiasm, as both critics and players voiced their dissatisfaction following its release on August 12, 2025. Conceived as a Helldivers2-style cooperative shooter set in the intriguing universe of Control, the game struggled to make a significant impact on the market. The $40 price tag was deemed excessive by many for what was largely perceived as a limited offering with repetitive mission design and a minimal arsenal.

Despite the game's initial reception, Remedy remains optimistic about Firebreak's long-term potential. The studio's latest fiscal update reveals an underwhelming performance on Steam, marked by a high rate of early player drop-offs and a wave of negative reviews largely attributed to the onboarding experience and mission structure. Nonetheless, the sentiment surrounding the game showed signs of improvement after a series of subsequent updates.

Subscription Revenues Underpin Performance

While standalone sales left much to be desired, Remedy acknowledged that Xbox and PlayStation subscription agreements played a pivotal role in sustaining the game's commercial performance. These agreements allow the studio to recognize subscription revenues over the contract period, providing a steady income stream amidst the tepid consumer sales reported during the game's launch phase.

In response to the launch setbacks, Remedy is charting a course toward improvement, outlining plans for introducing promising new weapons and a new job role. The company is also prioritizing major adjustments to enhance the new-player experience, acknowledging these as critical steps toward rejuvenating Firebreak's appeal and retaining players.

Looking Ahead: Control 2 and Beyond

While focusing on rectifying the initial missteps of FBC Firebreak, Remedy also casts its eyes toward the future with Control 2. Having entered full production in February, the sequel's development progresses smoothly, with the team concentrating on gameplay mechanics, immersive environments, and elaborate missions. Remedy's commitment to delivering captivating entertainment experiences remains undeterred as it works to uphold its reputation in the gaming community.
