Google TV App Gets Material 3 Redesign for Android Users

27 Aug 2025

Google TV has rolled out an exciting redesign for its Android app, transforming its visual style with the latest Material 3 Expressive update. This update, version 4.39, delivers a host of aesthetic enhancements that mark a significant departure from its previous look, aiming to offer a more cohesive and engaging user experience.

One of the standout changes is the introduction of larger banners, providing a striking visual impact when users browse content. The update goes beyond just aesthetics, as functionality takes a step forward with centered titles and ratings offering clarity and simplicity in navigation.

Introducing Hot & New

The reimagined Highlights tab has given way to the new Hot & New section. This space is now dedicated to featuring the latest releases, allowing users to keep up with fresh content at a glance. This tab also introduces muted autoplay previews alongside concise summaries, enhancing the viewing experience without overwhelming users. Moreover, the presence of prominent 'Add to watchlist' and 'Share' buttons ensures users can quickly interact with content they find appealing.

A Cohesive Experience in the For You Tab

The redesigned For You tab stands out with its dynamic Material You colors, using art palettes to unify the interface. This thoughtful design approach integrates personal aesthetics with functionality, enhancing user interaction with an eye-catching and personalized feel. However, the update is not without its quirks. The in-app remote, now offering a full-screen experience, is limited by a broken long-press Select gesture, impacting access to certain menus in apps like YouTube.

Despite these features, Google has yet to announce a wider release date for the redesign. The current rollout is limited, suggesting that the company might still be optimizing the experience before making it broadly available. This update keeps Google TV aligned with modern design standards and reflects Google's commitment to delivering an engaging and user-friendly app experience, even as some features remain under wraps.
