Play Store Discontinues App Sharing Feature in Latest Update

Apps & Games / Mobile / Android / Play Store Discontinues App Sharing Feature in Latest Update
10 Mar 2025

In a recent update to its software, Google has made a significant change to the Play Store by removing the app sharing feature. This decision, originally revealed last December, has come to fruition with the release of version 45.2.19-31.

The app sharing feature allowed users to easily send applications to others, a particularly advantageous tool in regions where internet access is limited or costly. Despite its usefulness, Google had been preparing users for this change over the past few months. The functionality that once made sharing apps directly from the Play Store a convenient choice is no longer available.

Transition to Files by Google

In light of this removal, Google has directed users to an alternative solution: Files by Google. This application offers a myriad of sharing tools that replicate much of the lost functionality. Users can now find app-sharing capabilities within Files by Google, which also hosts additional features aimed at streamlining file management for Android devices.

The consolidation of sharing tools into Files by Google appears to be a strategic move. By combining these functionalities within a single app, users can enjoy a more centralized and intuitive experience. This update serves as a reminder of Google's ongoing efforts to enhance user satisfaction and streamline the wide range of features available within its ecosystem.

For those who frequently relied on app sharing via the Play Store, this transition might initially introduce some level of inconvenience. However, Google's recommendation to use Files by Google offers reassurance that users can still effectively share apps without significant disruption in service.

As Google continues to evolve its platform, updates like these may initially catch users off guard. Nevertheless, the company's transparency and prior advisories have paved the way for a smoother shift to alternative solutions.
