LG Energy Solution, a leader in lithium-ion battery manufacturing, experienced a ransomware attack at an overseas facility. The site has since been restored, and the incident is under investigation.
Facility Under Attack
The ransomware attack targeted a specific LG Energy facility, leaving headquarters and other sites unaffected. The company confirmed that recovery measures were successful, and operations have returned to normal at the impacted site. Security measures are being strengthened as the investigation continues.
Data Compromise Details
The threat actor Akira claims to have stolen approximately 1.7TB of data, including 1.67TB of corporate documents and 46GB of SQL databases. Allegedly, this haul encompasses employee personal data such as visas, passports, medical documents, and Korean ID cards, along with sensitive corporate agreements and financial details.
Security and Impact
LG Energy Solution, with facilities across continents and a reported revenue of over $17 billion in 2024, is actively examining the incident. Although Akira's claims remain unconfirmed by the company, potential misuse of data could lead to its sale on the black market or be exploited for phishing attacks. The results of the probe will determine subsequent security protocols.
