Users of X are experiencing login difficulties due to a verification loop affecting both the app and website, leading to complications with the YubiKey security feature. The issue has been reported primarily by users in the United States and Canada.
Verification Challenges
The problem centers around users being repeatedly prompted to verify their identity using phone, email, or a code-generator app, yet either not receiving the code or seeing codes rejected. Additionally, some users are directed to re-enroll their YubiKey, associating it with x.com as the Twitter domain is phased out. This aligns with X's earlier guidance for re-enrollment by November 10, 2023, for accounts using security keys for two-factor authentication.
Service Recovery Efforts
Reports indicate a spike in login issues at around 1:30 PM ET. Despite the problems, most users can still access the platform. Sources suggest X engineers are currently reverting recent changes, and service restoration is expected soon. Users who can still log in and need to re-enroll their YubiKey are advised to navigate to Settings & privacy > Security and account access > Security > Two-factor authentication > Security key.
X has not yet released an official statement acknowledging the outage, but proactive steps by users could mitigate ongoing issues.
