Motion Twin, known for its hit game Dead Cells, has chosen to create a new title, Windblown, over developing a much-anticipated sequel. This decision reflects the studio's emphasis on creative autonomy rather than conforming to external pressures.
Studio Path and Vision
Dead Cells, released in 2018, became a significant success, prompting calls for a sequel. However, Motion Twin, a small partner-run studio, chose to venture into a new project. Yannick Berthier, co-creative director, stated that the studio operates based on its own creative interests, free from traditional business mandates.
Development and External Pressure
Despite frequent questions from fans about a sequel, Motion Twin remains committed to its unique direction. The studio transferred Dead Cells development to Evil Empire, which has since released several downloadable content (DLC) expansions and succeeded with The Rogue Prince of Persia.
Windblown and Market Performance
Windblown is currently in early access and is under active development. Though it hasn't achieved the same level of success as Dead Cells, it exemplifies the studio's dedication to exploring innovative concepts. The creative freedom garnered from Dead Cells' success has enabled Motion Twin to undertake new projects, albeit with differing market responses.
