Old School RuneScape will debut the long-awaited Sailing skill on 2023-11-19, offering players new exploration opportunities within the game. The new skill integrates with other game systems, adding a layer of complexity to existing gameplay.
Skill Design and Development
Sailing's concept has been a humorous topic among players for nearly two decades, but it became a reality this year after community approval. Game designers Kieren Charles, Ed Pilkington, and Elena Nordmark detailed the feature during its development phase, highlighting its technical challenges and creative opportunities.
The skill introduces scattered islands and distinct oceanic regions, each with different biomes and resources. This diversity requires strategic progression and meaningful player choices. Movement at sea presents new mechanics: ships can travel at a rate of four tiles per tick, demanding a unique approach to navigation and mechanics in the game's world.
Integration and Player Testing
The Sailing skill integrates with over ten existing skills, such as Construction, Crafting, and Fishing, allowing players to build and upgrade ships using marine materials. This integration ensures Sailing enriches the gameplay without overwhelming other skills.
During its development, Jagex conducted extensive player testing, utilizing prototypes in the Unity engine. Feedback from a public alpha at Runefest and a beta in June showcased mixed but growing support from the Old School RuneScape community. Designers emphasized the importance of maintaining the game's traditional spirit while introducing advanced technology and new interaction possibilities.
