Yokohama City University's Minds1020Lab has started testing anime therapy using avatars, scheduled to run until June 2026. This innovative approach involves participants selecting one of six anime-style characters, each with distinct backstories. These characters are explored in a visual-novel interface where psychologists take on the roles to conduct counseling sessions.
Therapy Mechanism and Setup
The sessions are designed to engage participants through roleplay, encouraging emotional expression and processing. Each session begins and ends with a psychological evaluation using standardized questionnaires. The narrative does not just focus on therapy but also immerses participants in a fictional world developed by Minds1020Lab, fostering engagement and depth in emotional exploration.
Research and Skepticism
The ongoing study is slated to conclude in June 2026. While there is some skepticism regarding the efficacy of anime-based therapy, proponents suggest that the format could be less important than the successful emotional outcomes it aims to achieve. Comparable methods in role-playing games (MMORPGs, TTRPGs) have shown potential in aiding emotional processing, highlighting a promising avenue if results are favorable.
