GeoGuessr World Cup in Stockholm Crowns French Player Blinky as Champion

21 Sep 2024

Reflecting on the origins of GeoGuessr, it’s hard to believe that a simple classroom diversion has evolved into a vibrant competitive scene. This year, the second GeoGuessr World Cup unfolded in Stockholm, Sweden, the birthplace of the game a decade ago. With eight finalists vying for supremacy, the stakes were high, with a grand prize of $5,250 and a share of the revenue from World Cup jerseys and Twitch subscriptions, all raised by the passionate GeoGuessr community.

The tournament was live-streamed on YouTube, capturing the attention of viewers worldwide. The final showdown was particularly electrifying, featuring French player Blinky against American contender MK. In a pre-match interview, Blinky expressed the significance of the title, stating, “I would see [becoming world champ] as a crowning achievement, not even sure I’d go for another one, but I might try.” His opponent, MK, initially appeared less confident, admitting, “This time, I’m actually cooked,” but later clarified the importance of victory, saying, “It would be a very good achievement. I’d be very happy with myself and that I didn’t waste two years of my life.”

The Structure of the Matches

The matches were structured into three distinct formats: move, no move, and no move with pan or zoom. Contestants began with 6000 HP, competing to guess locations as accurately as possible. Points, awarded out of 5000 based on proximity, were deducted from the opponent, ultimately leading to a knockout scenario. The best-of-five format meant that players needed to secure three victories to claim the championship.

The initial match showcased Blinky’s prowess, as he consistently edged closer to the correct locations. His first guess, mistakenly thought to be in the US, turned out to be Thailand, where he scored an impressive 4998 points, just 587 meters away, thanks to a keen observation of a road sign. Following this, he dominated the second match, and it seemed he was on the verge of clinching the championship in the third match as well. Blinky’s remarkable skill saw him land just 173 meters from the next location, inflicting a staggering 5000 damage to MK, nearly eliminating him from contention.

A Dramatic Turn of Events

However, MK benefited from a damage multiplier that escalated as rounds progressed, allowing him to mount a comeback. With only 47 points remaining, he managed to secure a win in the third round, demonstrating resilience and strategic acumen. The intensity of the final match had viewers on the edge of their seats, captivated by the unfolding drama.

Despite MK’s valiant efforts and a hard-fought victory in another round, Blinky ultimately emerged victorious, sealing his status as the world champion. The final was a testament to the thrilling potential of GeoGuessr esports, leaving an indelible mark on its growing competitive landscape.
