80 Game Developers Join SAG-AFTRA Amid AI Concerns and Strike

06 Sep 2024

The landscape of the video game industry is undergoing a significant transformation as 80 developers have officially joined SAG-AFTRA, marking a pivotal moment in the ongoing dialogue surrounding labor rights and artificial intelligence in gaming. Among the newly affiliated studios are notable names such as Studio Wildcard, creators of the popular game Ark, and the indie powerhouse Little Bat Games. This move comes in the wake of a strike initiated by SAG-AFTRA members, driven by concerns over the implications of AI on their work and livelihoods.

Commitment to Fair Practices

In a recent announcement on the union’s website, SAG-AFTRA expressed its satisfaction with the influx of new members, emphasizing the importance of establishing robust protections against the encroachment of artificial intelligence in creative processes. Sarah Elmaleh, chair of the union’s interactive media agreement negotiating committee, articulated the essence of this labor action, stating, “This labour action is about creating work with sufficient AI protections.”

Elmaleh further highlighted the significance of the agreements, noting, “The sheer volume of companies that have signed SAG-AFTRA agreements demonstrates how reasonable those protections are. We are thrilled for our actors to continue working under fair union contracts with companies who know how invaluable our performers are to their games.”

A Step Towards Sustainable Practices

Duncan Crabtree-Ireland, SAG-AFTRA’s national executive director and chief negotiator, echoed these sentiments, commending the video game companies that have embraced the tiered-budget and interim agreements. “Not only are they doing the right thing by their workers,” he stated, “they’re also helping to preserve the human art, ingenuity, and creativity that fuels interactive storytelling.”

Crabtree-Ireland’s remarks underscore a broader message: the agreements reached signal a divergence from the practices of some companies within the industry. “These agreements prove that the terms we propose are not only reasonable but feasible and sustainable for businesses,” he added, reinforcing the notion that collaboration between developers and unions can lead to a more equitable and innovative gaming environment.
