Minemen Minecraft Server Hit by Record-Breaking DDoS Attack at 3.15 GPPS

29 Aug 2024

The Mechanics of DDoS Attacks

To understand the gravity of this incident, it helps to draw a parallel with the classic game Diner Dash. In this game, players assume the role of Flo, who must juggle the demands of numerous customers in a bustling restaurant. As the game progresses, the influx of customers increases, creating a chaotic environment that can quickly overwhelm even the most adept players.

In a similar vein, a DDoS attack bombards a server with an overwhelming number of requests, effectively paralyzing its ability to function. If Flo were to experience a DDoS attack, she would suddenly find herself inundated with thousands of customers at once, leading to a swift decline in service and ultimately, the game’s failure.

According to a report from Global Secure Layer, the Minemen server was hit on August 25, following a test run the previous day that reached a staggering 1.7 gigapackets per second (GPPS). The actual attack escalated to an astonishing 3.15 GPPS, surpassing previous records. This incident has raised eyebrows, particularly as it was reported that the majority of the attack traffic originated from Russia, with contributions from an additional seventeen countries, including Vietnam, South Korea, Taiwan, the United States, and Ukraine.

While the largest DDoS attack on record remains the one that targeted Google in September 2017, reaching a size of 2.54 terabits per second, the Minemen attack stands out for its sheer volume of packets per second (PPS). This recent event has sparked curiosity and concern within the gaming community, as the motivations behind such a significant attack remain unclear.

Speculation abounds regarding the reasons behind this assault. Some suggest it could stem from a disgruntled player dissatisfied with recent changes to the Minemen server. However, without further information, the true cause remains a mystery. It is possible that in due time, the Minemen team may shed light on the situation, or we may hear from larger entities like Mojang or Microsoft if the implications are serious enough.

For now, the gaming community watches closely, hoping that this incident is merely a harmless prank executed by an overly ambitious hacker, rather than a harbinger of more significant issues to come.
